Trading as an economic concept is not new to humanity. Throughout the pages of history, we see how different civilizations have thrived on prosperous international trade. Today’s trading dictionary accommodates more than just buying and selling of goods and services. Thanks to the digital world, the possibilities have gone even beyond stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. Today’s largest financial market is the foreign exchange or forex market, where over 4 trillion USD worth of trading takes place every single day. Since the market is decentralized, you need a forex broker to participate in the trading activity. Here, a forex trading platform serves as the intermediary between the actual broker and the investor.
Understanding Forex
In short, forex is the currency exchange market. When you exchange the currency of a nation with another one, there is a price involved known as the exchange rate, and this is what drives the forex trading market. Currencies are always traded in pairs. They do not have any absolute price in the forex market. Instead, they are assigned a relative value where one currency’s market price is set when paid with another. For example, 1 CAD is worth X USD, or Y JPY, or Z EUR, etc. Most trading on forex platforms takes place in the U.S. dollar, Japanese Yen, British pound, Euro, New Zealand dollar, Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, and Swiss Franc. In recent times, with the advent of cryptocurrency, trading in Bitcoin, Litcoin, Ethereum, etc. has also become a popular choice among forex traders. Forex trading platforms cater not only to MNCs, commercial and central banks but also to investment managers and individual investors.
Enjoy the high liquidity and 24 hours market
The forex market is the most liquid and volatile marketplace in the world. Transactions can be completed within seconds, thus, giving way to the exchange of billions of dollars every minute of the day. The spreads are often very low, and with assessments of the highly volatile price movements, traders can reap exceptionally high amounts of profits on these platforms. It is also a global marketplace in the real sense of the word. The market is open is 24 hours a day for five days a week. The active session occurs from 9 p.m. on a Sunday and closes at 10 p.m. on Friday (GMT). During certain months, when countries make a shift towards daylight savings, the opening hours slightly vary. The market, although closed for retail traders over the weekend, is open to transactions even in the weekends.
Importance of choosing the right platform for trading
Trading with the right platform is central to attaining success in the international market. Most platforms would let it try out a plan with a demo account so that you can decide for yourself whether that particular platform is right for you or not. Pay attention to the slippage. While there is some difference in price always that may go unnoticed, see how negative and positive slippages are occurring on the platform to make a profit rather than ending up with a depreciated value. The solution should be stable and ideally never crash, be it a mobile application, a desktop software, or a web-based application. You should be able to navigate through the app without a hitch, meaning, it should come with an intuitive and friendly user interface. Bonus points if it also shows you market trends and gives you suggestions based on its ML algorithms. MetaTrader 4 is a very reliable platform for newbies as well as advanced traders. But it takes some time to get used to the platform. Hence, you can opt for a solution that offers a customized version of the MT4 platform, and once you gain confidence, you can jump right back to become the pro-trader you always wanted to be.
