iOS & iPhone – 30 Surprising Stats and Facts

Apple is one of the most successful companies in the world. It was the first US-based company to be worth $1 trillion and only the second modern company to do so, after PetroChina. Arguably its most famous products are the iPhone and the iPad. Both of these devices run on Apple’s proprietary mobile operating software called iOS. Although, from 2019, iPads have been given their own Operating System called iPadOS.

It was originally released in 2007 with the first iPhone. It was then later extended to power the iPod series as well and, eventually, the iPads. It has been upgraded with 13 versions, with the current version, iOS 13, only working on devices with more than 2 GB. iOS is also seamlessly integrated with Siri, Apple’s Virtual Assistant. This allows Siri to control the whole phone as the user directs.

iOS has earned itself a reputation for being a fast and smooth experience. Apple works hard to maintain this image and consistently updates iOS to reflect innovations. So, let’s take a cue from Apple and look at some facts really quickly.

Facts and statistics about iOS

It is difficult to imagine what would have happened if iOS devices hadn’t taken the world by storm. iOS’ popularity has only grown exponentially since its release 2007. It has been attributed to a variety of factors, from an amazing camera to a seamless software integration between the various existing Apple products.

No matter what the cause of iOS’ meteoric rise was, today, it stands as one of the most popular operating systems in the world, with arguably the most recognized logo stamped all across it. Let’s take a look into this cornerstone of the modern technological world, and marvel at the mind-boggling statistics associated with it.

1. Apple’s stock has grown by almost 16,000% since 2005: Apple (traded as AAPL) became a publicly-traded company in 1980. From 1980 to 2005, it was traded at a relatively stable value, going from $0.80 to $1.5. However, this all changed in 2005, after the announcement of the iPhone. The stock price rocketed up from $1.67 to $267.84 in November 2019. This is an increase of almost 16,000%! For reference, this means if someone held just $100 worth of Apple’s stock in 2005, it would be worth a jaw-dropping $1.6 million. After adding in the various dividends and incentives, this would equate to almost $2.5 million.

2. iOS devices earn 87% of all profits from smart devices but only sold 22.9% of the total units: Apple has always been associated with premium devices, with an appropriately high price tag. This price tag causes a gigantic discrepancy when it comes to units sold, and profits garnered. Apple sold 22.9% of all units, while its chief competitor, Samsung, sold 31.36%. Even with a significantly higher number of devices sold, Samsung only has 10% of the total profits.

It’s the first time iPads have been given their dedicated OS, and according to most users, it offers a much smoother experience. So, just like its mobile counterpart and origin, iPadOS boasts of an adoption rate of 84%. Since Android doesn’t release a tablet-only OS, it is difficult to find a comparison metric, so 6% might be a good stand-in.

It also doesn’t allow any third-party apps to modify any system settings. To circumnavigate these restrictions, a lot of users opt to ‘jailbreak’ their devices, allowing them to take almost full control of iOS. The major software that allows for jailbreaking is ‘Cydia.’ So, obviously, Cydia’s creators decided to name the software after an actual worm that infects apples.
