AWS Backup Review and Overview

Backing up the data on the cloud is very important for enterprise users as it keeps their data secure in case of any system errors. Cloud data should be backed up in redundant servers to ensure maximum data retainability and security. AWS Backup services are essential in providing enterprise backup services to data hosted in Amazon EC2, DynamoDB databases, and for Amazon EBS volumes.

Behind the scenes action

AWS Backup service operates on pure logic. Users can create backup plans and retention policies for the data in the cloud, including Amazon EC2, APIs hosted in the Amazon servers, Amazon RDS service, etc. Then the following resources are backed up to the AWS Backup servers according to the backup policies generated by the user.

It gives users complete control to monitor the backup data and modify things if necessary. They can also restore the backup quickly and efficiently if some issues happen with the current database. The service uses Amazon S3 to initiate data backup processes.

Backup monitoring

It provides a dashboard layout with accurate information regarding the status of backups. Audit the backups and restore them quickly when needed, thanks to the activity monitoring in real-time. You can view the status of backup and restore jobs in the AWS dashboard. AWS Backup also integrates with AWS CloudTrail to ensure a consolidated view of the activity logs.

The integration with Amazon Simple Notification Service makes it easy to audit and fix things when gone wrong – since it alerts users if a backup is under process or if a restore process has started.

Encryption and access to backup

AWS Backup provides secure data encryption service at rest and in transit, which essentially means that the data is end-to-end encrypted. The information is encrypted using secure keys from AWS Key Management Service (KMS) – which eliminates the need for any third-party key management providers. It has separate keys for the data resources, which is being backed up and data which is being restored. This creates a secured layer of encryption for your precious data.

Amazon EFS item-level recovery

Amazon's EFS filesystem can be easily backed up and restored. It allows flexibility in the cloud operating system storage as it is a dynamic and fast filesystem. AWS Backup can let users back up and restore individual directories or files from an EFS backup. This ensures that the data immediately required by the user is restored, without having to restore the complete filesystem to the working directory.
