Azure Firewall Review and Overview
A firewall is a no brainer network security tool. It monitors the flow of network traffic, grants permission, or blocks data packets based on some pre-decided security rules. When you are working with Virtual Network resources from Azure, you can turn to Azure Firewall to keep them protected from malicious viruses and hackers. It is a service that is fully integrated with Azure Monitor and lets you build and aggregate network connectivity and application policies. With the help of a static IP address, any outside firewall can detect the traffic that is coming from your Azure virtual network.
Increased Availability with Azure Firewall
Azure Firewall does away with the hassle of configurations of additional load balancers. Its high availability is a built-in feature, so you would require none to improve efficiency. To further boost the availability across multiple Availability Zones, you can configure the firewall during deployment and increase the uptime by up to 99.99% with the selection of just two or more zones. For proximity reasons, if you want to stick to a specific Availability Zone, you can still get a 99.99% SLA standard uptime. This deployment bears no additional cost, although you pay for the traffic in the Availability Zone.
Outbound SNAT and inbound DNAT support
The Source Network Address Translation (SNAT) translates all outbound traffic to Azure Firewall Public IP. So, you have control over virtual network traffic reaching the remote internet destination from your point of origin. In case your organization is using a public IP address range for a private network, Azure Firewall will translate this traffic to a private IP address within its subnet, or configure it for otherwise. The Destination Network Address Translation (DNAT) filters inbound internet traffic to the private IP addresses in your virtual network. A total of up to 250public IP addresses can be associated with the firewall.
Get assured threat intelligence with Azure Firewall
Whenever you make a request for a malicious website or a known harmful IP address is detected, the firewall’s threat intelligence powers up and denies the traffic from that source. Simultaneously, FDQN (Fully Qualified Domain Names) tags help in identifying well-known Azure service network traffic so that they can pass through the firewall and reach you in no time. You can also restrict the outbound SQL traffic to FDQNs only. As far as certifications are concerned, it meets all compliance standards, including PCI (Payment Card Industry), ISO (International Standard for Organization), SOC (Service Organization Control), as well as ICSA labs.
