Lang-8 Review and Overview
Lang-8 is a social platform for language learners. The platform allows its users to write or post the content in the language they have been learning, which then gets corrected or checked by a native speaker of that language. Every user can post the content as well as rectify the other content that is posted in their native language. Based in Tokyo, Japan, the community started in 2007, and today, it is just shy of reaching a million users. Service is available in over 90 languages with users from over 190 countries.
Why Lang-8?
Lang-8's huge user base from all over the globe can be used by registering on the platform. As mentioned, while the main platform is not taking any registrations yet, users are directed to another platform called HiNative, which works in the same manner. Users can create a free account as well as a Premium account as per their preferences.
Free account allows users to post their written content in a maximum of two languages of all the available languages on the platform. They can verify & correct the content posted in their native language with the help of tools that allow them to color the text, make it bold or italic, and even use strikethrough for providing a better explanation.
A premium account on the platform provides users with better access by an Ad-free interface and giving them priority over other users when the written content for verification is posted (their posts come on top). Users also get more features like downloading solutions in the form of PDF, posting in as many languages they want, and even searching the journals.
Other accolades
Lang-8 won the 'Wish2009 IT Media Award' in 2009. This award is presented to the web-based startups for innovation in a service through IT. Apart from this, the platform successfully raised an amount of $2 Million and is presently working on app release that will make the platform a better place for users and not some community filled with spammers or bots.
For learning languages correctly, users must learn how to read as well as write in a language. While the resources for reading and understanding are widely available, things are not so widespread for writing practice. This is where Lang-8 community serves as a boon for language learners and lets them interact with local speakers, an aspect that's essential for learning any language, but also the one at which most platforms failed, yet Lang-8 established itself.
