playn Review and Overview

The advent of new technologies enables developers to do more and more for their intended audiences, and the gaming industry is no different in this regard. New technologies always point out new possibilities for the development of more and more engaging games. PlayN is an excellent example of this. It is designed for use with Java games and enables quite a few cross-play options to the list of the framework’s already inexhaustible game development functions. It is readily and freely available on GitHub for anyone to use, a fact that also makes it very extensible.

Developing multiplatform games with PlayN

PlayN has an array of features that make it a perfect library for game development on the Java platform. The main feature is its multiplatform support, which enables games running on this library to be played on devices ranging from Android to iOS smartphones, and Windows to Mac desktops/laptops, without any requirement for essential code changes. It is designed to offer the same, unadulterated experience regardless of device, with the possible exception being that of the control scheme. The control scheme can be customized according to the convenience factor of playing on the device, with in-built support for different input.

Extensive 2D game building capability imbued in one library

PlayN offers several features geared toward making the most visually, aurally, and aesthetically-pleasing 2D video games possible. It also provides convenience-oriented features that allow developers to create and deploy their video games rapidly. With extensive support for OpenGL rendering and several shaders to boot, developers can focus on customizing the style and animations of the game. Also, the development of the graphical assets is made flexible with support for asset creation from scratch through Surface, or by importing assets from storage. Last but not least, PlayN uses a CPU renderer for consistent performance on all devices.

Development heaven with accessible builds

PlayN can prove to be very useful for all users alike in the field of game development with its special TriplePlay builds. These libraries are extended versions of the traditional PlayN ones and are equipped with a GUI, advanced animation, and physics simulation.
